Can I wire a ceiling rose with only 1 mains cable and 1 switch cable ?

In my back bedroom I don't have 2 mains cables to wire into the ceiling rose, just 1 swtich and 1 mains. Can I wire it up or is there a mains cable missing in the ceiling itself?

Can I wire a ceiling rose with only 1 mains cable and 1 switch cable ?
Yes this is fine, you can wire it up,it sounds like the end of line of the circuit. In lighting circuits you usually have 3 cables at a light (feed in,feed out and swith wire)

But the last in circuit only has 2 (feed in and switch wire)

So you should be fine, but if your not 100 per cent sure what your doing get a qualified electrcian in.A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing!!

Make sure all your connections are tight and that the fitting is earthed. Also make sure you have the power turned off before starting work!(Sounds obvious but people forget!)

If your still in doubt use a multimeter on your cables to find out which is which,be carefull!

(Please dont listen to the 2 above answers!complete nonsense!)
Reply:Simply break the live in the mains cable and put a switch across the break.

This makes a "spur" rather than a "ring" connection.

If you want to play it safe, break the whole cable and use a double pole double throw switch across the 4 ends. (Make sure you keep the cable colours correct!!)
Reply:This must be the last one on the curcuit to wire so yes it will be ok.
Reply:Yes you can , you run the live to the switch then double back to the ceiling rose ,
Reply:you need to lots of cables. on to supply the power and one to switch it on and of just asked my bf who knows about electrics
Reply:please don't try any electrical work if you are not sure what you are doing , find an electrician to do it for you
Reply:If you mean that you have two twin and earth cables, one from a lighting supply with a feed and neutral, and one from a switch to the rose location, then yes that is all you need. ISOLATE THE SUPPLY FIRST!! Take the supply into the rose and connect the blue (black) to the neutral terminal, connect the brown (red) to the loop in terminal. The cable from the switch- connect the brown (red) to the loop in terminal, mark the blue(black) with brown(red) tape or sleeving and connect to switched terminal (the one where the brown flex connects). Switch end-- mark blue (black) core with brown (red) tape and connect this and brown (red) core across switch terminals. Connect all earth wires at earth terminals, sleeve with green/yellow sleeving. Fit flex and lampholder to rose, fit lamp and test. If you don't understand, do not attempt to carry out this work.
